FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Why is junk email called spam?
A: Apparently, when junk email started to make its bothersome
presence felt, the majority of it was posted to newsgroups. As one informed
poster states, "This large amount of unwanted crap made normal discussion
impossible which reminded people of the Monty Python skit about SPAM. Thus
everyone started calling these junk newsgroup mailings as spam." So the spam
drowned out real conversation.
Hormel Foods, the makers of SPAM, corroborate this explanation and do not
object to the term (as long as it's spelled in lowercase letters to
differentiate it from their trademark). Although, if they had their druthers, we
would all use the phrase "unsolicited commercial email" or UCE. But that's not
nearly as catchy.

Q: How do I incorporate the
Barracuda Firewall in my domain?
A: Point the DNS mx record
to the ip address of the Barracuda Firewall and tell the Barracuda what the ip
address of your mail server is; you are done! FYI: It may take up to 72 hours
for the DNS record change to replicate through the internet, so we recommend
doing this on a Friday night if receiving email is critical to the operation of
your business.
Q: Why is the Barracuda spam firewall a better solution than other software
spam filters?
A: The #1 reason is that it
stops spam before it gets to your network and doesn’t task your network
resources (see the
technology page). Other reasons include the advanced 10 point aggressive
filtering, Central blacklists, adaptive learning, and collaboration from other
Barracuda filters on the internet. Software spam filters don’t share identified
spammers. Lastly cost.
Q: What happens to the spam?
A: The Barracuda firewall
will reject the message completely, deposit the message in your quarantine
folder on the Barracuda, or tag it as [BULK] and deliver it to you depending on
the “spam strength”. You have the ability to review the quarantine folder and
delete or deliver messages; you can even whitelist or blacklist messages so they
are handled exactly to your liking. Rejected messages and viruses are deleted
and unavailable for review. Messages designated as spam by us or you are sent
to Barracuda Networks to notify other Barracuda filters on the internet.
Q: Am I notified there are messages that have been quarantined for me?
A: Yes, a daily email
reminder is sent to each valid user with the list of messages in the quarantine
folder for your review.
Q: How much does it cost to have my email filtered?
A: We offer three pricing
levels from 1 to 100,000 mailboxes (see our
products page).
Q: What happens to attachments? Is there a limit on size or type?
A: For domain filtering
there is no limit on size. For individual mailboxes at raymondsafe.com, we limit
attachments to 5mb. We do screen attachments for viruses and block the entire
message, if infected. As for other attachments, we do quarantine certain
extensions. (Please see the Users manual for this restriction).
